Honey contains a lot of carbohydrates and a little fat. Thanks to a large number of various vitamins it is used as a medicine from a lot of deseases. It is also widely used in cosmetology because of the antioxidants it contains. It is very caloric, as 100 g of it contains about 330 kcal, but in spite of its sweetness and high energy value it is present in a lot of programs of weight loss.
It is high time we opened all the cards and found out whether honey is really a helper in the fight against extra weight or it’s another marketing ploy of the modern world that wants to make everyone slim and fit.
Composition and Health Benefits
Thanks to the unique composition of this product of beekeeping its healthy properties serve also for weight loss in spite of high caloric content and presence of glucose and fructose in it. Besides them there is a large number of vitamins and other substances which establish metabolism, improve blood circulation, stimulate excretory system and, what is most important, promote the burning of subcutaneous fat deposits.
If you don’t overeat honey, keep to the recommended proportions and combine it with other dietary products, you can reach excellent results.
- Antioxidants
In the process of weight loss the fat molecules in the body are gradually broken down. As a result free radicals are released. They are known to be very harmful for health. That’s why doctors are unanimously against any diets that exhaust the body.
Consumption of honey during this period enriches cells with antioxidants (among which there are such as catalase, halogens, pinocembrin, chrysin and pinobanksin) which are capable of neutralizing activity of these harmful free radicals. From this point of view nutritionists strongly recommend giving preference to dark sorts of honey for weight loss as they contain more antioxidants than light sorts.
- Nutrients
Losing weight people lose not only kilograms but also healthy substances and energy. That’s why very often they feel weakness, low efficiency, dizziness and other unpleasant side effects. You can avoid these troubles if you consume a small amount of honey daily during the period of diet. It contains a lot of vitamins (pyridoxine, riboflavin, acids – ascorbic, pantothenic and nicotinic) and microelements (iron, calcium, phosphor, magnesium, potassium, zinc and others).
- Glucose
Another component of honey, glucose, successfully fights against the problem of tiredness described above. Together with fructose it becomes a useful, natural and necessary source of energy for the organism during the hard period of weight loss. The main thing is not to overdo it, otherwise the whole benefit of it will turn into fat deposits.
- Glycemic index
Any product that a person consumes, to some degree, influences the level of sugar in the blood. If it increases already several minutes after the food enters the stomach, nutritionists call it high glycemic index (hereinafter – GI). It leads to increased appetite and formation of fat. But if the GI of a product is low, sugar goes to blood gradually, in portions, without causing appetite or stimulating formation of nasty folds.
The glycemic index of honey is about 50-70 (this parameter depends on the sort) and it is considered one of the lowest. That’s why it’s recommended for active use in getting rid of extra weight in the abdomen area which is the most problematic zone in women’s body.
So, the health benefits of honey as a means for intensive weight loss are not a myth at all in spite of all its sweetness and high caloric content. It is a scientifically proven fact that is not subject to doubts. But then why in the reviews we can read that this product causes only weight gain? Most probably it is consumed incorrectly.
Etymology. According to one version the word “honey” is of Greek origin: “μέθυ” is translated as “intoxicating drink”. It’s because once it was considered almost the only product from which it was possible to make alcoholic drinks of rather high ABV. Some scientists find ancient Hebrew roots in this word and translate it as “magic potion”.
Contraindications
For weight loss with the help of honey to justify the hopes put on it, it is necessary to follow the contraindications to its active use. It is unlikely that you will notice any serious changes in the body from eating one sandwich with it a month. But a course of diet implies its regular use: as a part of meals, in drinks (for example, with ginger in water), as an external agent against cellulite.
As a result, its effect will grow every day. And the organs and systems that can’t function fully due to some health deviations will start to fail – the person feels worse and has to admit defeat in the fight against extra weight.
Therefore remember the contraindications to this method of weight loss:
- diabetes;
- tendency to allergy;
- any diseases of lungs: pneumosclerosis, emphysema, pulmonary infarction, bronchial asthma, tuberculosis, obstructive bronchitis, bleedings of any origin;
- problems with cardiovascular system: heart asthma, heart defect, myocarditis;
- improper function of stomach: pancreatitis, peptic ulcer of any part, enterocolitis, gastritis;
- cholelithiasis/urolithiasis;
- rheumatism;
- cholecystitis;
- any forms of dermatitis and diathesis.
Each of these diseases is serious enough for its aggravation to go without harm for your health. Therefore, no figure, even the most slender, is not worth this sacrifice. First be sure to undergo examination, if necessary see a doctor and only if there are no doubts, go for it. If you have any of these contraindications you will have to reject the idea of using honey for weight loss and choose another method of modeling of your body.
Interesting fact. Honey is one of the few products that never go bad. For example, in the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun (1330 BC) an amphora with this amazing product was found which for all these centuries hasn’t lost its taste or healthy properties.
